We are very excited to be celebrating Ocean Wise month throughout the entire month of November. It’s not only the perfect time to celebrate and enjoy sustainable seafood, but it also provides a great opportunity to get our Ocean Wise partners involved in helping to educate consumers on why it’s so important to make smart choices for our oceans.

This is a goal that Ocean Wise partner Chef Alexandra Gaponovitch of the Calphalon Culinary Center in Toronto has been committed to for many years. She decided to become part of the solution by cooking with Ocean Wise seafood.

“I love exciting challenges and I love that this one is for a good cause,” she says. “It’s critical to our well-being and oceans that we understand our impact on the environment, because otherwise, in the future, we might not have certain seafood choices that we have today.”

Alexandra has joined the ranks of talented chefs competing at Vancouver Aquarium’s 2012 Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown competition in Toronto. She will be competing head-to-head for a winning title with 12 other top Toronto chefs with her original, ocean-friendly seafood chowder recipe. We can’t wait to try it!

If we’ve whet your appetite for Ocean Wise month, here are a few things you can do this month, and beyond, to make smart choices for our oceans:

  • Join us at Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown on Nov. 21 in Vancouver and Toronto. Top Ocean Wise chefs are competing at this fun event for the winning title. Sample a dozen original chowders, paired with full-flavoured beers, and vote for your favourite. Tickets are available now.
  • Our new Ocean Wise guide on the Foodspotting app for both Vancouver and Toronto launched today and, to celebrate Ocean Wise month, we have a contest running all month long. Spot any five Ocean Wise menu items in our guide for a chance to win a luxurious prize package from either Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver or the Briars, a heritage lakeside resort near Toronto. Visit here to download the app.
  • Look for the Ocean Wise symbol next to seafood items for Vancouver Aquarium’s assurance of an ocean-friendly choice.  And if you’re a home cook, choose Ocean Wise seafood from our partnering retailers and markets.
  • Be an Ocean Wise advocate. Share your commitment to eat Ocean Wise with family, friends and colleagues. Ask your favourite restaurant and retailer to consider becoming an Ocean Wise partner too.

“Every time we buy or consume seafood, we have the power to be a part of the solution,” says Mike McDermid, Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise partner relations manager. “Overfishing represents the greatest threat facing our oceans today, but it is something that all of us have the ability to change.”

Now, get out there and enjoy some amazing sustainable seafood! Supporting healthy aquatic environments has never tasted so good.
