If you’re living in or are planning to visit the Greater Toronto Area, there’s one food and wine event coming up that you’re not going to want to miss.
On Sunday, April 14, at Oliver & Bonacini’s Luma Restaurant, Executive Chef Jason Bangerter will once again prepare some mouth-watering Ocean Wise culinary offerings. This annual dinner is becoming a tradition, but this time, he will be presenting a multi-course tasting dinner, in partnership with Mission Hill Family Estate wine pairings, that is fit for a king, open to all, and is in support of sustainable seafood and harvesting practices. Sustainably harvested seafood is being provided by Steve Johansen of Organic Ocean (a proud Ocean Wise supplier).
The event coincides with the opening of many Pacific fisheries, meaning that many of the featured seafood items will come directly from Steve’s fishing boat to the plates at Luma. The “cast” of the event are representatives from Organic Ocean, Mission Hill, Luma and Ocean Wise, who will be connecting diners to the food and wine through their refined knowledge of their crafts (and it’s rumoured that Chef Ned Bell of YEW restaurant + bar in Vancouver might also attend).
Last April, the team from Ocean Wise, Vancouver Aquarium’s national sustainable seafood initiative, was in Toronto to launch Luma’s new Ocean Wise partnership. Luma is the Oliver & Bonacini “hot spot” at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Bell Light Box, featuring the fresh and lovely food of Chef Jason Bangerter. One year later, the Ocean Wise team still dreams about the chef’s canapés served last year, which included Spot Prawn Tartare, Fried Ling Cod Po Boy, Warm Glazed Mussels, Salt-Cured Arctic Char, Poached Trout Salad, and Smoked Whitefish Fritters (see photos below). It was a great celebration of Canadian seafood, featuring our producer partners from coast to coast to Ontario lakes.
Which is why you’ll want to see what the chef has in store this year, on April 14. The mouth-watering menu speaks for itself – once you take a look at it, you’ll scramble to get your tickets before they’re gone. Tickets, menu, and event details can be found here.
