Each week this summer, a new animal rescued by the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, presented by Port Metro Vancouver, will be featured on this blog. Stay tuned for more updates!
This week’s rescue story is courtesy of Chellan R., a veterinary technician at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre.
A young female harbour seal pup had been spotted by herself numerous times over the course of a week at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. She was in an area where the ferry boats were docking and the waves were tossing her around. The Marine Mammal Rescue Centre received several calls about this little pup from concerned BC Ferries staff; unfortunately the pup was in an area that was not very accessible. On August 4, the Rescue Centre received yet another call about her, and it was decided that it was time to take action, as her mother had not returned and she was finally in a location where she could be rescued.
Thankfully, several BC Ferries staff members got together and coordinated the rescue and, with guidance from our Marine Mammal Rescue team, were able to safely reach and contain the seal now named Rhea. But the BC Ferries crew wasn’t done helping us just yet – a staff member named Dalin was kind enough to transport Rhea all the way to the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre.
Rhea is now settled into her temporary residence at the Rescue Centre and is healthy and steadily gaining weight. Soon her diet will be switched to fish, and the plan is to release her back into the wild in the next couple of months. We would like to sincerely thank everyone at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal who was involved in the rescue. We couldn’t have done it without you!
As a self-supporting, non-profit organization, the Vancouver Aquarium does not receive ongoing funds to operate its Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, but relies on community support to continue its work.
