This holiday season, come out of the cold and enjoy a unique experience of aquatic light that will help lift those winter blues. Discover the incredible world of fluorescent and bioluminescent light that exists in the depths of the ocean during Luminescence—a celebration of aquatic light, which runs until January 22, 2014.
New this year, take a journey from the surface of the ocean to the abyss below with a floor-to-ceiling interactive installation that explores how the ocean changes once sunlight disappears. Learn about the animals that call the deepest parts of the ocean home, including bioluminescent animals that make their own light in a place where darkness reigns.
Experience Luminescence in action as you encounter a range of glowing creatures at the Vancouver Aquarium, like anemones, cuttlefish, jellies and even scorpions. Immerse yourself among our several species of jellies as they waltz through habitats that are aglow with new lighting to highlight their beauty.
In addition, Jelly Swarm, a unique light installation created by Tangible Intervention in collaboration with origami artist Joseph Wu, is back and features nearly a hundred jellies beaming with colourful LED lights.
And for added fun, join us for Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas 4-D, a zany adventure featuring everyone’s favourite threesome, with special effects that will tickle all of your senses. Watch Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth and Diego the saber-toothed cat on their wild adventure to the North Pole to visit Santa after clumsy Sid accidentally causes trouble and puts Christmas in jeopardy!
Don’t miss visitor favourites, such as our electric-eel-powered tree, and be amazed by the transfer of electricity from this incredible animal to the tree lights. Make sure you catch a glimpse of the man in red, Scuba Claus, who can be seen at 11:30 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays, as well as every day from December 21-24, in the Strait of Georgia Exhibit.
Luminescence runs until January 22, 2014. Fore more information about Luminescence and to view our daily show schedule, please visit our website.
