Looking to start the new year off with a splash? The Vancouver Aquarium is hosting its 15th annual Divers’ Weekend on January 18-19, 2014, and is inviting you to join this one-of-a-kind celebration of diving. You don’t have to be a diver to enjoy this unique opportunity, which offers divers and non-divers alike with an opportunity to exchange ideas, explore the oceans, and expand their horizons.

Diving is a crucial part of the Aquarium’s operations and research efforts, and is an important aspect of animal and habitat care, research and monitoring of nearby ecosystems, and animal husbandry.

Divers’ Weekend features a lineup of engaging seminars with topics on Dive Travelogue on Saturday and Diving Safety on Sunday. Immerse yourself in spectacular diving videos and photos from the San Juan Islands, Fiji, and the Caribbean on Saturday, then take advantage of expertise offered by local diving experts on Sunday with seminars on topics such as decompression stress management, technical diving safety, and diving skills and principles.

Like each year this wonderful weekend is a great way for the whole family to come and discover scuba diving, the aquarium and its exhibits and listen to great talks. This years theme: travel and dive safety. Discover our role in supporting the aquarium and other stewardship work and see what will be new in Barkley Sound.

I agree with Barb Roy about this show providing the opportunity to meet the people in our dive industry. Since I usually have a booth at the show for my dive business, which is located in Bellingham, Washington, I am always being asked what it is like to dive around the San Juan Islands. At the show I can tell divers all about it and show them images as well.
Another topic I am asked about is technical dive training or what type of equipment is needed for diving in the northwest. The dive show provides an easy way to directly talk with potential students or divers already trained in this field.
This year I will be offering a seminar on Sunday about Technical Diving Safety at 2:30pm where I will discuss a wide range of related topics related to safety for extended range exploration and wreck diving. Hope to see everyone there! And I really like the critters at the Aquarium too 🙂

Every year the Vancouver Aquarium has sponsored this exciting dive show, I have had the opportunity to meet numerous people who have made the dive industry what it is today! The show has always been a fun time to talk with the dive operators in person about their dive destinations and to attend a workshop or take in a few seminars. I have even presented a few travel/photography seminars myself. This year I am looking forward to seeing the friendly faces of not only the dive operators and fellow divers but also the new divers who have completed their dive courses. Oh yeah, I really like the marine critters at the aquarium too!
