For the past five years, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre has been taking to the streets – literally – for the annual HUB Cycling Bike to Work Week.

Since 2007, HUB Cycling has organized a bi-annual Bike to Work Week to encourage commuters to take advantage of Vancouver’s great cycling infrastructure and get on their bikes for a week rather than drive to work. Not only does this reduce carbon emissions, traffic and pollution, cycling to work has great health benefits and gives a sense of connection with your community. All week long celebration stations were scattered around the city where people could learn more about city biking, get free bike tune ups, prizes and more. This spring almost 11,000 riders signed up logging over 534,000 kilometres saving a total of 116,000 kilograms of greenhouse gases.

Bike to Work Week is also an opportunity for a little friendly competition between businesses, non-profits and organizations across the city to log the most rides throughout the week. This spring 30 Aquarium staff members signed up for the challenge logging over 1,900 kilometres to and from work. We’re proud to announce that for spring 2015 we’ve come in first place for the non-profit sector!

Here are our overall stats from Bike to Work Week 2015:

Number of active riders: 30
Trips logged: 213
Total kilometres cycled: 1,928.50
Calories burned: 57,855
Kilograms of greenhouse gases saved: 418

Vancouver Aquarium staff members are committed to walking the walk when it comes to conservation and environmental stewardship. Whether it’s biking to work, making our own sustainable cleaning products, choosing Ocean Wise™ sustainable seafood or participating in shoreline cleanups, sustainability is a part of everything we do.

Join us in our sustainability mission by cycling or taking transit on your next Aquarium visit, composting and recycling your café purchases, or by signing up for a shoreline cleanup in your own community.
