Which Ocean Wise initiative is the best (at building gingerbread houses)?
Welcome to the annual Ocean Wise Gingerbread Contest, where all the people that make this place hum face off in sugary battle of jujubes, icing and blue-whale gummies. There are a few rules to obey, like making the house 100% compostable (lighting excluded) and not exceeding the size of a cafeteria tray but, other than that, it’s a no-holds-barred battle to glory. There are two categories to enter: traditional and original creation. Here are this year’s winners.
Best Traditional House – Winner
“Tradition” — Catering + Events (pictured above)
“The team agreed that it would be fun and exciting to create that one traditional piece, showcasing the spirit of the holidays. It came down to us becoming inspired by our younger sides. We also thought it would be fun to incorporate our very own Chef Ned Bell’s new cookbook Lure, which highlights the importance of sustainable seafood and what that means for the future of our oceans.”
“Green Living” – Interpretive Delivery
“When a battery dies, a tour itinerary changes or an animal goes to the bathroom in the middle of a science talk, it’s our team’s job to adapt. This was also true with our gingerbread house — we straight up forgot about the deadline and had to improvise on the morning of the contest. We had to find materials quickly: popcorn stolen from a coworker’s desk (sorry, Nathalie!), fallen branches from around Stanley Park and trimmings “donated” from our office plants. We call the result “Green Living” as a testament to Ocean Wise’s sustainability goals. Secretly, it’s also a testament to the power of improvisation.”
Best Original Creation – Winner
“12 Days of Fishmas” – Development
“Ocean Wise is such an amazing place to work with so many incredible people. We wanted to do something festive, which recognized as many of our colleagues’ work areas as possible, and have some fun with it, of course! The competition gets stiffer every year so we knew we needed to do something very special. The idea of creating the “12 days of Christmas” with an Aquarium spin was something we all loved, but adding in the challenge to make each layer fit into a Christmas tree was almost a challenge too far, luckily we love a chance to get creative as a team! We hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we loved seeing all the other creations!”
Happy Holidays from all the teams at Ocean Wise!
