CRAFT Beer Market has a fitting home in Vancouver, especially for a restaurant dedicated to sustainability. Situated inside the historic Salt Building in Olympic Village, the neighbourhood is home to some of the most sustainable buildings in the city. But it wasn’t always this way.

Once upon a time, sawmills, shipbuilders and other heavy industry populated the downtown coastline, setting a foundation for Vancouver’s growth. But this industrial past also sullied the  waters that had once been an important food source for local First Nations. Fast forward to the present-day and the area has transformed once again. This time the Salt Building’s occupants are proving that economic prosperity need not come at the expense of environmental sustainability.

One of CRAFT’s core values is being responsible. That means demonstrating to customers and staff a commitment to social and environmental stewardship at all locations across Canada. The chain collaborates with several sustainability initiatives, including the Ocean Wise Seafood program, offering sustainably sourced seafood on its comfort-food menu.

Participating in the Ocean Wise program also has a net benefit to the business. CRAFT’s public commitment to the environment helps attract and retain talented millennials who increasingly want to work for organizations aligned with their beliefs. It also takes part in other corporate-responsibility practices —like using clean energy from Bullfrog Power and donating meals through the non-profit Mealshare.

Displaying the Ocean Wise logo on CRAFT’s menu gives customers the assurance that their purchasing power is going to the right place. With locations in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Ottawa, there’s no limit to what Craft can achieve. (A new location in Kelowna is set to open this year.) As a young company, responsible beliefs and core values help this business flourish.

Ocean Wise Seafood
