On World Ocean’s Day, June 8, 2017, the Vancouver Aquarium expanded to become Ocean Wise: a global ocean conservation organization focused on protecting and restoring our world’s oceans. And now the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup will be housed under the Ocean Wise umbrella, too. Soon, you’ll start seeing Ocean Wise on the Shoreline Cleanup website, materials and in upcoming activities.
This is a pivotal shift we’ve been working on for several years; reorganizing ourselves to become a globally focused ocean conservation organization that carries out conservation, research, education programs, while also managing accredited aquariums, including the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre.
While our name has changed, our commitment to keeping shorelines healthy for wildlife and people remains the same. Together with World Wildlife Fund Canada, Ocean Wise will continue to inspire Canadians to take action for our blue planet by preventing litter from entering rivers, lakes, streams and oceans where it harms wildlife and aquatic habitats.
From Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup’s humble beginnings in 1994 – when employees and volunteers at the Vancouver Aquarium organized a cleanup along a beach in Stanley Park to protect the city’s shorelines – our program has also expanded. It engages tens of thousands of Canadians from every province and territory in cleaning their shorelines.
In partnership with WWF-Canada, and with support from presenting sponsor Loblaw Companies Limited, we’re now one of the largest direct-action conservation programs in Canada. Help us continue to grow, by leading or joining a shoreline cleanup in your community in 2018! Find a cleanup near you at www.shorelinecleanup.ca and explore the ocean world with us at www.ocean.org.
