The Ocean Wise family is recognizing the contribution of Sarah McAlpine: mother, wife, educator and tireless supporter of the Vancouver Aquarium.

Sarah passed away on October 26th at the age of 81 (Vancouver Sun obituary).

Sarah was one of the Vancouver Aquarium’s original docents, trained in the very first orientation session given by Dr. Murray Newman.

Sarah served on the Vancouver Aquarium’s Board of Directors from 1991 to 2008, on the Executive Committee as Governor-at-Large, and acted as chair of the Education and Aquarium Experience Committee.

Sarah was a passionate advocate in engaging schools, children and young people in connecting with the ocean through the Aquarium and she was hugely influential in the development of Ocean Wise’s Education programs which now reach more than 500,000 people each year.

Sarah made a huge contribution to our community and she will be forever in our hearts. Her legacy will continue on through the thousands of young people she inspired to love and protect the ocean.
